Missouri Maps, Info & Links
Thayer, Missouri, is a small, quaint town located on US Highway 63 about 1 mile north of the Missouri/Arkansas state line. It's approximately 25 miles from West Plains, Missouri. We have a population of approximately 1,996. Founded in 1882 as Division, by Mr. George Nettleton, our town served as a division point for the Kansas City, Springfield, and Memphis Railroad.
In 1885, Nettleton proposed the name Augusta for the name of the community that had been built around the railroad. In 1886, following a change in the name to Thayer, because there already was a community called Augusta, the incorporation of the city became complete.
Today the Burlington-Northern Sante Fe now has the railroad terminal located in the downtown area. Train crews from Thayer switch with other crews from Springfield and take the trains on south to Memphis.
Neighbors knowing each other, and a sense of family, is one of the many virtues of this community. Located in a rural agricultural area of the state, cattle and hog operations dot the area outside the city.

Hardy, which grew from a railroad construction camp in 1884, has retained its quaint turn-of-the-century appearance along Main Street. In fact, Hardy's central downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places and hasn't changed much since Model-T days. New growth and attractions have located at the edges of town, leaving a tiny mecca for craft and antique shopping in the heart of town. The little town boasts three museums, summer musical shows, bed and breakfast inns and several festivals each year. Cherokee Village, the state's first resort/retirement settlement, is just southwest of town, offering lake activities and two championship golf courses.
The Spring River, which is fed by Mammoth Spring and is ideal for trout fishing and reliable year-round floating, is also nearby Hardy.
